Glasmålning

Arches reach for the sky. The light pours through the windows and reaches the floor tiles, coloring them in hundreds of joyful shades. All is silent. The filtered sun gently warms us, warping us in a soft and comfortable blanket. We can rest assured that all is well.

Glasmålning means “stained glass” in Swedish. The Glasmålning cowl is inspired by the colorful and modern stained glass windows found in some Swedish churches. The cowl is worked with all-over lace patterns complementing each other and forming diamonds and arches. The asymmetric edgings add flare by creating waves at the bottom and peaks at the top. Take the time to enjoy your crafting and watch the patterns slowly take shape on your needles.

The Glasmålning cowl is especially suited for gradient yarns. But of course, you can use solid, semi-solid or speckled yarns. All these options will complement the stitch patterns as long as they're not too fluffy. Round yarns with lots of stitch definition will work best.

Yarn
Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big 1:1 (Worsted; 100% Merino; 500 meters / 547 yards per 200 grams); 1 ball; sample uses 191 grams in color 5006 (gradient: subtle green / linden green / apple green / moss green).

Needles
3.75 mm (US size 5) 80 cm / 32 inches circular needle or size to obtain gauge.

Gauge
18 stitches and 25 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, unblocked.
13.75 stitches and 25 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in stitch pattern B – Bay, blocked.
Note: obtaining the gauge given is not crucial but will affect the finished size and the yardage needed.

Notions
Stitch markers: 1 in color A (beginning-of-round marker), 8 in color B (optional). Tapestry needle. Blocking pins. Blocking wires (optional).

If you'd like to substitute yarn, I'd suggest to use the following options to work the cowl:

• 1 strand from a 200g skein of DK / worsted yarn with one continuous gradient (Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big 1:1 knits more like DK than worsted)
• 1 strand from two 100g skeins of DK / worsted yarn with one continuous gradient and use them "head to toe" (for example: light to dark then dark to light, forming a double gradient)
• 2 strands held together from two balls of fingering-weight yarns, starting at exactly the same color for both
• one gradient yarn completed at the beginning and end with the matching colors to transition in and out of the gradient
• a set of gradient skeins from your favorite local brand or dyer. If you are using a fingering-weight and two strands, you can even fade them at the color transitions (for example: two strands in color A, then one strand in color A and one strand in color B, then two strands in color B, etc.)
• you could even try to dye your own gradient yarns (thanks to peacockmom for suggesting that to me!)
• and of course, you can use a smaller weight, like fingering held single to knit the cowl. In that case, check your gauge to maintain a good circumference (and most probably add some horizontal pattern repeats). The yardage will really depend on whether you want to maintain the circumference of the cowl or not. I used 200 grams of Merino wool (worsted weight). 200 gram of fingering should be OK with as well, but more might be needed if you choose a heavy fiber like cotton (less yardage for the same weight compared to wool).

Notes about customizing the cowl
The cowl can be customized very easily in width by adjusting the number of stitch repeats (horizontal repeats). To customize the cowl in height and making it smaller, it is possible to remove vertical repeats of Pattern B (the one forming the diamonds in between the arches). The cowl will then be 40.5 cm / 16 inches tall (with one vertical repeat of Pattern B instead of two). Selecting a thinner yarn will also make the cowl smaller in all directions. Of course, in a similar way, it's also possible to add vertical repeats of Pattern B and make the cowl taller. This could come handy when using a thinner yarn. Make sure you swatch with your selected yarn to calculate the cowl circumference and height and make it fit you perfectly.
