HUMBOLDT PENGUIN 20250823182782RT1PUB
Penguins are birds adapted to marine life that have lost the ability to fly, but have become formidable swimmers that feed on fish, crustaceans and squid. All species live in the southern hemisphere and are characteristic animals of the cold Antarctic regions, although the Humboldt penguin lives further north, on the coasts of Chile and Peru, in the region bathed by the Humboldt Current. Humboldt penguins, like all penguin species, are birds adapted to marine life that have lost the ability to fly and are, on the other hand, excellent swimmers. They have adapted almost entirely to aquatic life, since they practically only come ashore during the breeding season. Accordingly, the wings have become flippers and the body shape is hydrodynamic. The plumage is very dense and waterproof, with three layers of feathers distributed evenly throughout the body, so as not to offer resistance to water and to protect the body from cold and humidity. The legs are set far back and have the three front toes joined by an interdigital membrane. The beak is strong and with sharp edges, as is the tongue, which has a spiky appearance, adaptations that allow them to better capture the crustaceans, cephalopods and fish on which they feed.
