THE SHADOW OF THE GOAT 20250823174242RT1PUB
The Atlas mouflon or arruín is an African bovid of the goat subfamily of which up to six different subspecies have been described. It is easy to recognize by the brown color of its fur, the thick horns curved backwards and present in both sexes and, above all, by the long hairs that hang from its neck, chest and front legs. It lives in the mountains of the Saharan region. It usually spends the hours of sunlight hidden in the shade and it is in the evening or at dawn when it comes out to feed on grasses and leaves of shrubs.
Natural habitat: North Africa: Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Mali, Niger, Sudan, Chad. Introduced to the United States, Mexico and Spain.
It usually lives in small family groups of a few individuals led by an adult male, although at the end of the dry season larger groups of up to several dozen adults, young and young animals can form. It is usually more active in the cooler hours of the day and moves with a really agile and confident step on both slippery and rocky terrain.
