VULTURE 20250823174445RT1PUB
Vultures are scavenger birds of prey, that is, they feed only on dead animals (carrion). They are found on all continents except Oceania and Antarctica, and there are 23 extant species (including condors). A particular characteristic of many vultures is their bald head, devoid of plumage: this is certainly due to the fact that a feathered head would get dirty with blood and other fluids when introduced into the carcasses of large animals and would be difficult to keep clean. Vultures are generally large birds and, for this reason, need to find pockets of warm air to rise. Their flight is rather slow, and they do not flap their wings much, but typically soar (that is, they stay in the air with their wings outstretched, without alabaster), making circles and more circles. They often appear in small groups.
