GRIZZLY BEAR 20250823182475RT1PUB
Ursus arctos horribilis is a subspecies of the brown bear (Ursus arctos). In North America they are known as grizzlies.
Their colors can range from beige to yellowish brown, dark brown or black, often depending on the geographical location.
They can weigh between 180 and 770 kg.
They are sexually dimorphic: males can be 1.5-2 times the size of the female.
They have a distinctive hump between their shoulders.
The female becomes sexually mature at around 3-5 years of age and, depending on the climate, is in heat for three weeks during May and July. Although mating occurs during this time, the fertilized eggs will not be implanted in the uterus until autumn to give the female time to accumulate a fat reserve for herself and her cubs for hibernation, as they are born between January and March. The young are born blind, hairless and weighing less than 450 g. They leave the den in the spring, when they reach a weight of about 9 kg, and will remain with their mother for at least 2 years.
