The unmistakable and spectacular black and white pattern of the zebra's coat varies greatly among the different species and geographical races that are distributed throughout eastern and southern Africa. The Chapman's zebra, which is characterized by having less contrasting dark lines between the black stripes, inhabits the savannahs and open, rather arid grassy plains of southern Africa.

The spectacular pattern of the zebra's coat has a very specific function: to blur the silhouette of the individuals within the herd and thus disorient predators –mainly lions and hyenas– when they try to hunt them on the African savannahs.

They are social animals that live in small family groups, but can unite in large herds during the dry season, a time when they can travel great distances in search of water and grass to survive in the arid conditions. They often form mixed herds with other herbivores such as wildebeest, impalas or gazelles.
