Cockatoos Screaming In Windy Forest ORTF 3D
A wonderful Australian forest soundscape recorded near Olinda Falls outside Melbourne using the Schoeps ORTF-3D microphone array.
When we left the parking lot, we were already greeted by cockatoos shrieking, squawking, and whistling overhead while strong wind cut through the treetops. Recorded in November, it was still very cold with temperatures below 13 degrees and in true Melbourne fashion, it felt like all four seasons in one day. While I was setting up the gear, the wind picked up and leaves began to fall and rustle across the forest floor, with distant wailing calls echoing through the valley.

Standing next to the gullies and tall eucalyptus trees was already impressive, but the screaming cockatoos made it something else entirely. A little farther down the trail, Olinda Falls came into the picture. It’s not a huge waterfall, more like a running creek, but that’s the beauty of nature recordings.

Big waterfalls often become a constant band of white and pink noise, while smaller creeks reveal all the detailed movement of water hitting stones and roots. We set up more gear to capture these variations, but the rain started again and with no shelter nearby we packed up and walked back up to the parking lot.
This release marks our very first individual sound library using the Schoeps ORTF-3D, and we’re excited to publish more smaller, affordable immersive packs soon.
