The Lincolnshire East Coast is well known for its ‘bucket and spade’ towns but, personally, I prefer the smaller villages where there is usually nothing to be seen beyond sand, sea, and very few people. Even in the colder months I find it balm to the soul to walk the sands with my dogs and breathe in the (usually) very cold, fresh air. Sandilands is just one of those villages; nothing more than a row of beach huts in varying shades of blue, a sand bar to scramble over and then ….. Absolute tranquility. So this jumper celebrates the beach huts, the sand, the peacefulness. I hope you enjoy wearing this garment no matter where you are!

This is a top-down jumper with a yoke pattern beginning, after the neck, with six bands interspersed with Latvian braids before separating for the sleeves and then body of the jumper. There are further Latvian braids at the beginning and end of the last band before the hem of the jumper. The sleeves, which finish just above the wrist (bracelet length) are also worked in a circular method and finish in the same way as the body of the jumper. My preferred method of making any garment is the top down method which, apart from giving the wearer the opportunity to try on as they’re knitting but also ensures that there is very little finishing required beyond sewing down the edging and cuffs and blocking. The instructions for the Latvian braids are given in the pattern.

The sample shown was knit in Wool is the Answer 4 ply yarn (100 gms = 400 metres). It is 75% super wash merino and 25% nylon. You will need 2/3 balls of a main colour (depending on size) and one each of 20gm skeins of seven contrast colours for the bands.

Sizes vary from 93cm to 122cm MEASURED AT THE UDERARMS.
