ABOUT THE WORK

‘All my ships are white’ takes text from Virginia Woolf’s novel ‘The Waves’, and reflects on the curiosity, adventuring nature and sense of wonder that is present in children and that often becomes discarded and forgotten as adults. Using the imagery of petals and boats, the work examines what it is to cultivate curiosity and a sense of playfulness. I hope that it may bring some joy to both those that perform it, and those that hear it.

‘All my ships are white’ was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society for the Chorus of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, through the Royal Philharmonic Society's Composers Programme 2021-22.
