Kawari hanazashi forks shippo's overlapping circles: re-anchored through a straight grid, every crossing blooms into an eight-point flower. Flowers are a favorite sashiko motif for spring and renewal, stitched here in indigo circles with a gold grid (one color is lovely too).

DETAILS:
• Skill level: Beginner, repeated circles and straight grid lines in two colors (or one)
• Time: approx. 1 to 3 hrs for a 10x10 in piece
• Thread: about 12 m across the two colors (buy a little extra for thread carried across the back)
• You'll need: cotton or linen, sashiko thread (indigo and gold shown, or any pair), a removable marker or water-soluble stabilizer
HOW IT WORKS:
• Print at 100% and check the 1-inch check square
• On light fabric, trace at a window or lightbox; on dark fabric, use water-soluble stabilizer
• Stitch the straight lines first, horizontals then verticals; then the petals, the same wave serpentine both ways (across each row, then down each column)
