HDI HERO: A Standard of Living Game

HDI Hero is a fast paced development simulation where students race against the clock to build a thriving country. Players have sixty seconds to raise their nation’s Human Development Index to 0.900 by balancing three core pillars of development: health, education, and income. Each pillar is shown as a live bar that rises and falls based on what the player collects, making development visible and urgent.

Positive forces such as medicine, schools, and trade increase the appropriate bar, while disease, conflict, and corruption drag it down. If any single bar hits zero, the state collapses, even if the other two are doing well. This forces students to understand that development is not just about money, but about keeping all parts of society working together.

As the HDI rises, the game speeds up and conditions become more intense, mirroring how higher levels of development require more careful management. The background and development label shift from low to medium to high and finally very high, giving students a visual sense of progress as their country improves.
