For this session of ‘Dance Around the World’ we will be visiting Egypt, to learn a dance inspired by Egyptian artwork.
Dance is very important in times of celebration across Egypt, and is central to many festivals, events, and celebrations. In Ancient Egypt, traditionally only the lower classes would be trained in dance, while wealthy Egyptians would keep trained dancers in their homes to perform for them.
As students will likely have studied Ancient Egypt before, their knowledge of the Pyramids, hieroglyphics, and ancient art is key to this lesson. Angular, stiff shapes, and strong poses - reminiscent of carvings - makes for a slightly more challenging dance, but one that the students have great fun performing.
