For this session of ‘Dance Around the World’ we will be visiting New Zealand, to learn the Haka.

Traditionally, the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand would perform the Haka as a ceremonial war dance or challenge, to display a tribe’s pride, strength, and unity. It’s also a customary way to celebrate, entertain, and welcome visitors. In modern times, it’s famously seen before any All Blacks New Zealand Rugby game.

This dance requires a lot of strength and assertiveness, and there are some distinct facial expressions that can be used throughout. As this routine is slightly shorter than other dances, it provides a great opportunity for students to develop their own choreography to extend the dance.
