This cute pincushion uses a curved English paper-piecing technique to create this ring design, which is then appliquéd onto a background, hand quilted, then pieced with edging and a backing before being stuffed to complete.

This printed pattern comes with pre-cut paper templates as well as a template sheet to photocopy for future use.

In these easy-to-follow instructions, I show you how to glue-baste your shapes using the paper templates included, before sewing them together using a 'flat back stitch'. I then explain how to appliqué your flower onto the background before adding some decorative hand quilting.

Skill level: Experienced hand-piecer

You will need;

• Five 2.5" x 3" strips in co-ordinating fabrics

• One 1.5" x 18" strip in a contrasting fabric

• One 6.5" square of background fabric

• One 6.5" square of backing fabric

• One 6.5" square of wadding

• Temporary glue pen - which you can purchase here

• 6" square of tracing paper

• Thread for piecing - I use a 50wt cotton, and thread for quilting - I use an embroidery floss in a contrasting colour

• Gentle fabric starch

• Basic sewing kit including pins and needles, sharp scissors, and a sewing machine

• Filling - I have used Crushed Walnut Shells which give extra weight to the pincushion as well as acting as an abrasive to keep your pins nice and sharp. This pincushion takes approx. 400g of shells to fill it well, which you can purchase here. Alternatively, you could use toy stuffing or a mixture of toy stuffing and wire wool to keep your pins sharp.
