About this work

‘letting the light in’ is a personal reflection of life over the past few months of navigating change.

I have seen more middle-of-the-nights and early mornings over these summer months than I have for over a decade. There is something inherently beautiful and peaceful in watching and waiting for the night sky to lose its inky darkness to the small persistent rays of morning light. Those small chinks of light that pierce the darkness, welcoming in another day; the subtle slow - and then the all too fast - change from the always different sunrise hues to the full daytime colours. A reminder of hope, of newness, and the importance of slowing down and sitting with the moments, as they are all too fleeting.

‘letting the light in’ was commissioned by Drake Music Scotland, in partnership with Ty Cerdd and NMC Recordings, with funding from PRS Beyond Borders.  The work won the Royal Philharmonic Society's Award for Chamber-Scale Composition in 2025.
