10 Fascinating Secrets to a Happy, and Safe Pregnancy in Less Than 10 minutes- Volume 2
In our first post we talked about so many important things to help you along. Here is some more fascinating secrets to a happy and safe pregnancy.
Secret # 1 Wear sunscreen
It's especially crucial to protect yourself from the sun's harsh rays during pregnancy, when your skin is more sensitive than usual. You may wonder why is it so crucial to use sunscreen?
Sunscreen will not only prevent you from skin cancer, but it will also protect your skin from discoloration and other pregnancy-related disorders that are made worse by exposure to the sun.
Hyper pigmentation and other types of dark spots — blotches, patches, dots, or lines that range in color from reddish-purple to brown, blue, or gray — are more likely when you're pregnant because your skin is more sensitive. Melasma and other types of hyperpigmentation can become more pronounced when you're exposed to the sun.
Another recommendation is to avoid using sunscreen that contains insect repellent because it is ineffective. If repellent is required, purchase it separately and apply it after applying sunscreen. Keep in mind that sunscreen may need to be reapplied.
The greatest form of sun protection, of course, is prevention, so try to stay inside or in the shade as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun is at its fiercest.
Look for sunscreens that provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Check to see if they have a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater.
Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide-based sunscreens, commonly known as mineral or physical sunscreens, are a suitable choice for pregnant women because they're hypoallergenic and sit on the skin rather than being absorbed. Even if you don't plan on swimming, look for those that are water-resistant.
It's crucial to remember, though, that despite what you may have heard or read, you shouldn't be overly concerned about individual sunscreen components. If you're not sure whether a sunscreen is safe to use during pregnancy, read the label and consult your doctor.
Secret # 2 Drink lots of fluids
Best tips why you should drinkl lots of fluids
Maintaining proper hydration is especially important during the summertime. Here are just a few of the advantages of staying hydrated during pregnant:
- Reduces constipation and hemorrhoids
- Swelling is reduced.
- Skin becomes softer.
- Boosts your energy
- Cools you down.
- Reduces the likelihood of urinary tract infections
- Reduces the risk of preterm labor and birth.
How much water is enough during pregnancy because you need more? It is recommended that you consume 8-12 glasses (2.3 liters) of water every day. Your drinking is on track if you go to the restroom frequently and your urine is pale or colorless.
Trouble drinking water?
I have had clients who had issues drinking water alone. If you have trouble drinking enough water on a daily basis, here are some suggestions to help you avoid dehydration:
- Fruits like lemons, limes, and frozen raspberries can be added to your water.
- Caffeine should be avoided.
- Increase your diet of fruits and vegetables (they contain water, too!).
- Water or fluid intake includes milk, juice, sparkling water, tea, and soups.
- Pay attention to your body and drink sufficent water that you don't feel thirsty.
- Drink enough water to make your urine colorless or light yellow in color.
- Stay away from the sun. Indoors, or early or late in the day, is a good time to exercise.
- Increase your hydration intake as your exercise level rises.
Secret # 3 Fly smart (avoid air travel if possible early and late in pregnancy)
Considering jet lag to the normal fatigue of pregnancy and you would just want to end the trip right? It makes sense though to try and minimize travel if you can. Traveling during pregnancy is generally safe as long as there are no known issues or concerns with your pregnancy. The second trimester is the best time to travel while pregnant. Most of the time, you're over the morning sickness of the first trimester and a few weeks into the third trimester, when you're more easily fatigued.
Most airlines allow pregnant women to travel up to the eighth month of their pregnancy. Traveling during the ninth month is normally permitted if your health care practitioner has given you permission.
It is common for airlines to have narrow aisles and small restrooms, making walking more difficult and using the restroom more uncomfortable. Because of the possibility of turbulence shaking the plane, hold on to the seatbacks when walking down the aisle.
You might want to select an aisle seat so that you can quickly get up to use the restroom or simply stretch your legs and back.
Avoid smaller private flights and fly on large airlines with pressurized cabins. If you must fly in a smaller plane, stay below 7,000 feet.
Wearing compression stockings may minimize the risk of DVT, but this is debatable.
Avoid travel from the 37th, week of pregnacy
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the International Air Travel Association advise expecting mothers to avoid travel from the 37th week of pregnancy until delivery if their pregnancy is uncomplicated.
Women with complex pregnancies or risk factors for early labor, such as mothers carrying multiples, should avoid travel from 32 weeks to birth.
Wearing compression stockings may minimize the risk of DVT.
Travel should be avoided from 32 weeks onwards till the baby is born.
Secret # 4 Avoid changing cat litter (to reduce risk of toxoplasmosis)
Toxoplasmosis is a prominent cause of death in the United States, due to food contamination. The Toxoplasma parasite is carried by more than 40 million men, women, and children in the United States, but only a small percentage of them develop symptoms since the the immune system fights hard to prevent it. Women infected with Toxoplasma during or just before pregnancy, as well as anyone with a weakened immune system, should be informed that toxoplasmosis can be fatal.
Except in cases of mother-to-child (congenital) transmission, blood transfusion, or organ transplantation, toxoplasmosis is not transmitted from person to person. People are frequently infected by one of three main modes of transmission:It can be spread by:
- Transmitted from animals to humans through food (zoonotic)
- From mother to child (congenital)
- Exceptional circumstances
Secret # 5 Give in to cravings – sometimes
Cravings during pregnancy are a common and well-known adverse effect of pregnancy. They can start at any point and continue all the way through. These are sudden urges for certain strange foods. I remember my experience with them. My cravings were starch, and believe it or not dirt, and chalk. I ate the starch, and chalk ,but could not get myself to eat the dirt.
Did you know that one of the many early signs and symptoms of pregnancy is cravings? Nausea and vomitting is well-known, but cravings, which begin between 1 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, can also be a factor. Hormonal changes, as well as heightened senses of smell and taste, can all contribute to these symptoms. It's possible that they'll show nutritional deficits.
Secret # 6 Know when to call your care provider
Knowing when to call your care provider is essential to prevent serious conditions from getting worse and it is just good to have access to them for whenever concerns arise. Here are some things you should not take lightly and contact your health care provider for:
- Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection
- Signs of Kidney Infection
- Breaking Your Water
- Vomiting
- Severe itching All Over
- Contractions Before 36 weeks
- Vaginal Bleeding
- Decreased Fetal Movement
- Blurry or Spotted Vision
- Headaches
- Swelling
Secret # 7 Don’t smoke; avoid secondhand smoke
Smoking during pregnancy has been related to a number of negative effects, including:
- Preterm pregnancy and low birth weight
- Head growth is restricted.
- Placental issues
- Stillbirth risk is higher.
- Miscarriage risk is higher.
- Prenatal smoking exposure has also been related to health and developmental implications in children, including lung function, persistent wheeze, and asthma, perhaps through DNA methylation.
- Strabismus, refractive errors, and retinopathy are all examples of visual problems.
Smoking by pregnant mothers is sadly common. In 2014, 8.4% of pregnant women smoked at some point during their pregnancy, with rates higher among American Indian and Alaska Native women aged 20 to 24, at 13 percent and 18 percent, respectively.
By the third trimester, one-fifth of women who smoked during the first six months of pregnancy had quit. As you can see smoking during pregnacy can have serious damaging effects. I would suggest that you begin by reducing the amount you are taking now and work out a plan with a professional to eventually quit.
Secret # 8 Get enough rest and sleep
There is no doubt, rest and sleep is essential, especially when you're expecting!
"How many hours should a pregnant lady sleep?" is a question that many people ask. The majority of doctors recommend sleeping for eight to ten hours per night.
However, as every mother who has gone through a pregnancy knows, this isn't always achievable.
There are a slew of issues that could disrupt your sleep, and you might not be able to get the nine or ten hours you need. I know when I was pregnant I only slept when I felt tired
As a result, make every effort to spend at least eight hours in bed, with the goal of getting as much sleep as possible. Don't get frustrated if you only get seven hours of sleep each night; this will just lead to additional sleepless nights!A pregnancy pillow is a great idea.
Secret # 9 Wear your seatbelt
Wearing a seatbelt is one of the safest things you can do during pregnancy; in fact, not wearing one is harmful. The safest approach to safeguard your growing kid is to protect yourself by wearing a correctly positioned seat belt every time you're in a car or truck, according to research.
Make sure your seat belt is securely fitted to avoid harming yourself or your infant. Use a three-point restraint system, which includes a lap belt and a shoulder strap.
Place the lap belt low and firmly on your hipbones, under your belly button. Never put your belt across or above your stomach. The quick jolt from a belt in this position during a crash could cause placental abruption (when the placenta breaks away from the uterus). If your seat belt doesn't fit comfortably, you can use a seat belt extender to give you a little extra room.
Secret # 10 Don’t take over-the-counter medications or herbal remedies without medical consultation
Most pregnant women are concerned about what over- the counter-medications are safe for them to use. Always talk to your care provider about any concerns you may have about any medication before purchasing. Here are a few you may be interested in:
Relief From Allergies
It's fine to take Tylenol or acetaminophen (regular or extra strength).
Antihistamine chlorpheniramine alone itself (chlor-Trimetron)
Tabs of Benadryl
Nasal saline rinse
- Sinus rinse or neti pot
- Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra are some of the most commonly prescribed allergy medications.
Constipation Remedy
- Fiber (Metamucil®, MiraLax®, Citrucel®, BeneFiber®) can be taken on a regular basis.
- Colace® and Dulcolax® are two laxatives that can be used on occasion.
- Hemorrhoids and tucks
- In equal parts, prune juice, orange juice, and 7-UP®
