About the work

Commissioned by the Herne Hill Festival, ‘From These Roots We Rise’ was influenced by memories of my own experiences of local music services and the nurture, camaraderie and inspiration that years of performing in orchestras and choirs gave me. These services are integral for our future generation of musicians, and they are to be cherished and celebrated. The roots that they plant in our hearts and minds grow and last for many years and influence our path.

Without my own immersion in the activities provided by my music service in Ceredigion, Wales, I would not be where I am today. I will remain forever grateful for those formative years.  

‘From These Roots We Rise’ was first performed by the London Contemporary Chamber Orchestra and the pupils of Lambeth Music Services’ Tippett Music Centre on 18th October 2014, for the Herne Hill Music Festival.
