About this work

Weathering | ˈwɛð(ə)rɪŋ |
noun:  the process of wearing or being worn by long exposure to the atmosphere.

Weathering was written during the Spring of 2020, during the initial lockdown due to Covid-19. What began as a reflection on the withstanding of a storm gradually evolved into the reflection on how the act of weathering can create something new; an object being worn down through prolonged intense pressure, but one that will expose a new and often beautiful form as a result.  An item such as sea glass can take anywhere between 20 and 50 years to change from the broken glass shards it once was, to the beautiful and frosted pebble found on the tide line.

What can often be seen as small acts and experiences all add up to something bigger; hopefully this season that we find ourselves in right now will lead to us forging new and sustainable ways of working, of being, of supporting, of believing in the months, years and decades to come.

‘Weathering’ was commissioned by violist Laura Sinnerton, and recorded for her debut album 'Inner Voices', released by Birmingham Record Company in June 2021.
