“Sunset Over Ellerhayes” - Panorama

The walk up the hill from Hele, past Hele Payne Farm, is a tough one. However, at the top you’re rewarded with stunning views out to Killerton and towards the small hamlet of Ellerhayes, when looking South West through the valley.

I captured this scene as a handheld, multi-shot panorama, stitched together in Lightroom. The 2:1 aspect ratio I feel really captures the atmosphere of the hazy sunset. And it’s a mega image, printing up to 40 inches wide at 300 PPI for an impressive impact in your room; you can even see the odd fly buzzing above the crest of Killerton hill, peaking out on the left of the image. I was inspired by the typically-Devonshire scene, though the grazing sheep seemed fairly nonplussed.

Shooting into the sun isn’t the most fun pastime, giving me a slight headache as I grabbed a series of shots of this scene! But I’m glad I persisted, with the low sun casting fantastic silhouettes while also spotlighting layers of the lush field. The best results seemed to be when the sun was partially blocked by the branches of this grand tree, allowing me to recover some of the details from the silhouetted landscape (see zoomed-in detail in preview image above). The tree was intended as the main centrepiece, but the unintended star of the show became the lens flare when I got home.
