TME Intermediate OAA Orienteering Years 5–6 | Ages 9–11 | Upper KS2
Develop navigation, teamwork and independent decision-making with six progressive Orienteering lessons for Years 5–6.
Pupils begin with map language, symbols and orientation before learning to thumb the map and complete star-orienteering activities. They use handrails and catching features, estimate distance through scale and pacing, compare route choices and manage risk within a score course. The final lesson involves course setting and an assessed festival.
Every lesson includes a detailed teacher plan and matching visual infographic. The resource provides curriculum guidance, vocabulary, equipment, boundaries, safety procedures, Know and Show outcomes, Head–Heart–Hands assessment, AfL, STEP differentiation, SEND and EAL strategies and Plan–Monitor–Reflect prompts.
The scheme creates meaningful links with geography, mathematics and problem-solving while keeping pupils physically active. Clear boundaries and routines make increasingly independent navigation safe and manageable.
