You can blog on many platforms without buying a domain.
I have blogged on Payhip for a while without buying a domain.
You can also blog on WordPress, Wix, Tumblr, Weebly, and Medium without buying a domain. You will be blogging in their subdomain instead.
This can save you money but there will be limitations.
You have a limit of what tech you can use
Some tech needed my website domain. URL which is something I don't have. When I inserted my subdomain on Wix, it would want to insert the pop up on Wix's own website which I don't want it to do.
Some software will require your own domain.
There is a limit on tech you can use for your website.
I will make a blog post about what website software need a custom domain.
Your Website is more likely to be shutdown
Since you are bloging on someone else's domain. They have control on what you can do on their domain.
If you blog about some offensive and controversial opinions you have with some of these platforms' subdomains, your website could be shut down . Your content on their domain can damage their brand. Your website with offensive opinions won't be shut down if it has your own domain.
They will also shut down your blog if you have been inactive on it for a long time.
Tumblr has shut down Users' blogs because they were inactive for a long time.
You also will be limited on your email marketing
Email Marking with a free domain can lead to your emails being less likely to get into your subscriber's inbox. Google's and Yahoo's Gmail and Yahoo Mail update will probably prevent your marketing emails getting into some of your subscriber's inboxes that are in Gmail and Yahoo mail.
If you are email marketing without a domain I recommend Mailchimp and Podia which can give you an email adress with their own domain so your emails are more likely to get into subscriber's inboxes.
I also learned that buttons on a email with a free domain are more likely to be in spam. So I had to use linked text instead of buttons.
