What Is Adjustment Disorder?
Adjustment Disorder is characterized by the development of emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor(s) occurring within three months of the onset of the stressor(s). These symptoms or behaviors are clinically significant as evidenced by one or both of the following:
1. Marked Distress: The distress experienced is out of proportion to the severity or intensity of the stressor, taking into account the external context and cultural factors.
2. Impairment in Functioning: There is significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
Examples of Stressors
- Interpersonal: Relationship issues, divorce, conflict with family members or colleagues.
- Occupational: Job loss, change in job responsibilities, workplace stress.
- Educational: School transitions, academic failures.
- Health-related: Chronic illness, serious injury.
