The Lower Otter Estuary Restoration Project returned the mouth of the River Otter in Budleigh to its natural form as marshland, as it was several hundred years ago, reconnecting the river to its flood plains. This was a controversial scheme locally but has produced plenty of new stunning scenes for photographers and artists to capture alike.

I took this soon after the brand new bridge opened in January 2024, so it’s one of the first photos documenting this newly formed (or reformed) landscape. I liked the perspective here of the split in the meandering estuary reflected the silvery sky nicely as evening was drawing in. The low tide was exposing the rocks in the foreground, providing some balance to the shot in both tone and texture.
