“The Pyg’s Foot”

The Pyg Track is one of the most popular routes to climb Snowdon, because of the varied and stunning views throughout the 2-3 hour ascent. It’s called ‘Pyg Track’ after originally being used by miners to transport the ‘pyg’ (black tar) to copper mines on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).

On the initial part of the climb and around the foot of the mountains, just after setting off from Pen-Y-Pass, you are treated immediately to stunning views through the valley looking back down towards Llanberis. I stopped here to take several photos, with this one among the most dramatic.

There’s five layers of jagged rocks and mountainsides, getting hazier the further your eye is drawn through the valley. You’ll also see the levels of stone cut into the more distant mountainside, part of the historic slate mines in this area of Snowdonia. All the while, low cloud looms overhead, adding to the dramatic contrast.

I’ve desaturated much of the colour and added some sepia tones to add to the drama and better capture the essence of this ‘black tar track’.
