Navigating Storms: They're not the enemy
You've been taught that feelings are weakness.
That crying is childish.
That anger is sin.
That sadness is a lack of faith.
That anxiety is just overthinking.
So you've learned to hide them.
To push them down.
To pretend they don't exist.
Between you and me, let me teach you the language of your own heart, where your map meets your heart:
Feelings are not the enemy. They're information.
Anger tells you something matters.
Sadness tells you something needs to be released.
Fear tells you something needs to be protected.
Anxiety tells you something needs attention.
The Prophet ﷺ felt all of these:
He felt fear in the cave.
He felt grief at Khadijah's death.
He felt anger when his companions were persecuted.
He felt sadness when his children died.
And he didn't apologise for any of it.
He didn't hide it.
He brought it to Allah.
Your feelings (fear or guilt) are not a lack of faith.
They're a sign of life.
They're a sign that you're human.
They're a sign that Allah created you with a heart that feels deeply.
And that's not a weakness.
This is how you find your way through the storm.
It's what the compass points to
That's a gift.
Here is how you read the weather of your heart and hold it without drowning:
- Name them. “I feel angry.” “I feel sad.” “I feel scared.”
- Listen to them. What are they trying to tell you?
- Bring them to Allah. He can handle them. He's not scared of your big feelings.
- Let them move through you. Feelings are like waves. They rise. They fall. You don't have to stop them. Just learn to float.
🤲 A Prayer for Navigating Big Feelings:
Ya Allah,
I've been hiding my feelings.
Help me bring them to You.
You can handle them.
You're not scared of them.
You made me this way, with a heart that feels deeply.
Help me feel without drowning.
Ameen.
