When the Compass Wobbles: For the one who feels behind everyone else
You look at where you are.
And then you look at where everyone else is.
They're ahead.
They're succeeding.
They're moving forward.
And you?
You're still here.
Still struggling.
Still trying to figure it out.
The weight you carry has a name. It's called shame.
And the shame?
It's heavy.
It sits on your chest when you wake up.
It whispers in your ear when you scroll.
When you're spiritually dry and ashamed to admit that you can't feel Allah anymore.
Some days you're embarrassed by your own story
There are times when you look at your life and feel disappointment
Literally because you're not where you thought you'd be
It follows you into your prayers, making you feel like you don't even deserve to stand before Allah.
“What's wrong with me?”
“Why can't I get it together?”
“Everyone else has figured it out.”
“I'm wasting my life.”
Here is what the compass points to, and let me trace this on your map. This is where your map meets your heart.
You are not behind.
You are on your own path.
And your path is not theirs.
Allah gave YOU your map.
Not theirs.
He didn't give you their timeline.
He didn't give you their pace.
He didn't give you their story.
He gave you yours.
And yours is not behind.
It's just... yours.
Yusuf (AS) was thrown in a well.
Sold as a slave. Imprisoned for years.
Everyone else seemed to be moving forward.
His brothers? They were living their lives.
The people of Egypt? They were building empires.
And Yusuf? He was in a dungeon. Forgotten. Alone. Waiting. But every step was leading him to his throne.
Your story is not over yet.
You don't know how it ends.
But you know Who holds the pen.
Let me offer you a few gentle anchors:
- Stop comparing. Their map is not your map. Their pace is not your pace. Your only race is toward Allah.
- Look how far you've come. Not how far you have to go. What could you do a year ago that you can do now? You've grown. You just forgot to notice.
- Remember: everyone struggles. Everyone. They just hide it better. The girl with the perfect grades? She cries at night too. The boy with the confidence? He doubts himself too.
- Be gentle with yourself. You're doing the best you can with what you have. That's enough.
- Trust Allah's timing. He knows what you can handle. He knows what's best for you. He hasn't forgotten you.
This is what Chapter 9 of “The Map Allah Gave Me” is about.
It's called “Letting Go of Wrong Turns.”
It helps you release shame and embrace where you are right now.
May every wrong turn you've ever taken, every detour, every stumble, every fall, carry you gently, and land you softly, in the grace of Allah.
🤲 A Prayer for the Wrong Turns:
Ya Allah,
I feel behind.
I feel ashamed.
I feel like I'm not where I should be.
Help me trust Your timing.
Help me be gentle with myself.
Help me remember that I'm not behind.
I'm exactly where You need me to be.
You are Al-Hakeem, The All-Wise.
You don't make mistakes.
And You don't make mistakes.
Ameen.
