For the one who's still punishing themselves
You know what you did.
You've replayed it a thousand times.
In your bed. In the shower. In the middle of class.
And every time, it hurts just as much as the first time.
You've asked Allah for forgiveness.
You've said sorry.
You've promised not to do it again.
But you still can't forgive yourself.
Why?
Probably because you think punishing yourself is the same as repentance.
But it's not.
Allah is Al-Ghafur; The Ever-Forgiving.
Al-'Afuww-The Pardoner.
Ar-Rahim-The Most Merciful.
He forgives again and again.
He doesn't hold grudges.
He doesn't bring up the past.
So why do you?
When you refuse to forgive yourself, you're saying:
“Allah, Your forgiveness isn't enough. I need to add my own punishment.”
But His forgiveness IS enough. It's always been enough. It's enough for you.
Here are 5 steps to forgiving yourself:
- Acknowledge what happened. Don't minimise it. Don't excuse it. Just name it.
- Ask Allah for forgiveness, one more time. Even if you've asked a hundred times. Ask again.
- Accept that He has forgiven you. This is the hard part. But it's the most important part.
- Write a letter to yourself. From the you who's forgiven. To the you who's still holding on.
- Do one small good deed. Not to earn forgiveness. But to remind yourself that you're more than your worst moment.
This is what Chapter 9 of “The Map Allah Gave Me” is about.
It's called “Letting Go of Wrong Turns.”
It helps you release what you've been carrying.
Not because it was okay.
But because you deserve peace.
🤲 A Prayer for Self-Forgiveness:
Ya Allah,
You have forgiven me.
Help me accept it.
Help me forgive myself the way You already have.
Let me be free.
Let me be light.
Let me be Yours.
Ameen.
