A guide for the Muslim teen who gives everyone grace but themselves
You know how to be kind to others.
When your friend is struggling, you don't say, “Get over it.”
You don't say, “You're being dramatic.”
You don't say, “Other people have it worse.”
You listen.
You hug.
You say, “I'm here. You're not alone.”
So why don't you say those things to yourself?
- Why is it that when YOU are struggling, the voice in your head turns cruel?
- Why is it that when YOU are tired, you call yourself lazy?
- Why is it that when YOU are crying, you tell yourself you're weak?
Here's what I want you to know:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness in all things.” (Muslim)
In ALL things.
Including the way you treat yourself.
Being kind to yourself doesn't mean you're letting yourself off the hook.
It doesn't mean you stop trying to grow.
It doesn't mean you ignore your mistakes.
It means you hold yourself accountable with the same tenderness you'd offer a friend.
It means you say:
“I messed up. And I'm still worthy of love.”
“I'm struggling. And I'm still enough.”
“I'm not where I want to be. And I'm still trying.”
Here are 5 ways to be kinder to yourself today:
- Talk to yourself like you'd talk to a friend. If you wouldn't say it to someone you love, don't say it to yourself.
- Give yourself permission to rest. Rest is not laziness. Rest is how you keep going without breaking.
- Forgive yourself for not knowing better. You did what you could with what you knew. Now you know more. That's growth.
- Celebrate small wins. Got out of bed? That's a win. Prayed one prayer? That's a win. Ate something today? That's a win.
- Remember whose you are. You belong to the Most Merciful. And He doesn't make mistakes. Including you.
This is the heart of Chapter 5 in “The Map Allah Gave Me.”
It's called “Rest Stops Along the Way.”
It helps you learn to care for yourself the way Allah cares for you, gently, patiently, with mercy.
Because your body has a right over you. (Bukhari)
And so does your heart.
🤲 A Prayer for Self-Kindness:
Ya Allah,
I've been so hard on myself.
Help me be gentle.
Help me rest without guilt.
Help me forgive myself the way You already have.
Help me see myself through Your eyes.
Ameen.
