A letter from The Compass 🧭
Dear Parent,
I see you.
The one who tries to talk to your teen and gets one-word answers.
The one who sees them struggling but doesn't know how to help.
The one who prays for them every night and wonders if it's making a difference.
I see you.
And here is the truth that changes everything:
Your teen is not broken.
They're not lost.
They're not rejecting you.
They're just... becoming.
And becoming is messy.
Becoming is loud.
Becoming is quiet.
Becoming is confusing, for them and for you.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best of you are those who are best to their families.” (Tirmidhi)
But being “best” doesn't mean being perfect.
It means being present.
It means being patient.
It means loving them through the mess.
If I could sit beside you right now, I would say these 5 things your teen needs from you:
- Presence. Not solutions. They don't need you to fix everything. They need you to sit with them in it.
- Permission to feel. Let them be sad. Let them be angry. Let them be confused. Feelings aren't sins.
- Your dua, spoken and unspoken. They might not ask for it. But they need it.
- Space to become. They're not you. They're not your younger self. Let them walk their own map.
- Unconditional love. Not “I love you when you pray.” Not “I love you when you succeed.” Just... “I love you. Always.”
This is why I created “The Map Allah Gave Me.”
Not just for teens.
For the families who love them.
It's a way to open conversations that feel impossible to start.
A way to understand what they can't say aloud.
🤲 A Prayer for Parents:
Ya Allah,
Soften my teen's heart.
Open their understanding.
And until then, give me strength and give them other people who see them.
Use me to love them the way they need to be loved.
Ameen.
