For the 2 am thoughts that won't let you sleep
It's 2 am.
You should be sleeping.
But your mind won't stop.
It's replaying that conversation from three days ago. It's worrying about tomorrow.
It's listing everything you've ever done wrong, or questioning the answer to our lives.
And the more you try to stop it, the louder it gets.
If this is you, you're not broken.
You're not weak.
You're not “too much.”
You're human. And humans overthink.
But here's something that might help:
Your mind is not your enemy. It's just trying to protect you.
The racing thoughts?
They're your brain's way of saying: “I'm scared. I don't want to be hurt. I don't want to fail.”
So instead of fighting your mind, what if you listened?
Gently. Without judgment.
Here are 5 things to try when you can't stop overthinking:
1. Name the feeling.
“I'm feeling anxious.”
“I'm feeling scared.”
“I'm feeling overwhelmed.”
Naming it takes away some of its power.
2. Breathe. Slowly.
In for 4. Hold for 4. Out for 6.
Your breath is an anchor.
It brings you back to now.
3. Ask: “What do I need right now?”
Not tomorrow. Not next year.
Right now.
A glass of water? A hug? A cry?
Give yourself that.
4. Make wudu.
Feel the water on your skin. Let it wash away the noise.
“And We send down water to purify you.” (8:11)
5. Talk to Allah.
Not formal dua. Just... talk.
“Ya Allah, I'm scared. I'm tired. I don't know what to do. Help me."
He's listening. Always. All the time.
This is what Chapter 7 of “The Map Allah Gave Me” is about.
It's called “Being Present on the Journey.”
It helps you come back to now, the only place where peace exists.
Not in yesterday.
Not in tomorrow.
Just here. Just now.
Where He is.
🤲 A Prayer for the Overthinker:
Ya Allah,
My mind won't stop.
Quiet it.
Bring me back to this moment.
Let me feel Your peace.
Let me rest in Your presence.
“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (13:28)
Ameen.
