A1.  Healthcare Problem

Urinary tract infections are the most common hospital-acquired infection, accounting for 40% of all hospital-acquired infections.  More than 80% of these infections are directly related to indwelling urethral catheters (Underwood, 2015, p. 271). These catheter associated urinary tract infections or CAUTIs, are easy to be overlooked as significant considering other infections come with higher morbidity and mortality rates such as ventilator-associated pneumonias, surgical site infections, central line infections or bacteremia.  The urinary catheter is an invasive intervention for patients but is seldom required.
