Pageviews/Innervisions is an experiment in vision. It offers a theory of the page and a catalogue of practices that probe its possibilities. The book’s premise is simple: Words and images have never lived in discrete realms. Poet, visual artist, and critic Jill Magi explores the many ways they coexist on the page. Ranging from photographs to fonts, from ekphrasis to sketching, she opens up new ways to understand a world awash in multimedia representations.
Jill Magi works in text, image, and textile and is the author of LABOR (Nightboat Books), SLOT (Ugly Duckling Presse), Cadastral Map (Shearsman), Torchwood (Shearsman), Threads (Futurepoem), the chapbooks Die for love/furlough, Poetry Barn Barn!, Confidence and Autonomy, Shroud (a collaboration with Jen Hofer), and numerous handmade books. Her essays have appeared or are forthcoming in The Racial Imaginary (Fence Books), Ley Lines (Wilfrid Laurier University Press), The Force of What’s Possible (Nightboat Books), The Eco-Language Reader (Nightboat/Portable Press), and Letters to Poets (Saturnalia). Recent work has appeared in jubilat, Jacket2, The Brooklyn Rail, Rattapallax, The Columbia Poetry Review, Drunken Boat, and The Michigan Quarterly Review. Jill’s visual works have been exhibited at the Arcade 6 Gallery Columbia College, Brooklyn Arts Council Gallery, apexart, AC Institute, and Pace University. She was a resident artist at the Brooklyn Textile Arts Center, a writer-in-residence with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and an arts grant recipient from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Jill has taught at the City College of New York, The New School, Goddard College, and in the graduate writing programs at Columbia College Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2013 she joined the faculty at New York University Abu Dhabi where she teaches poetry electives and writing through textiles.
