Other business had gained such a large overstock that when things were going unsold they had to order less. The agriculture businesses had prices that continued to drop which left farmers unable to purchase newer machinery. At this point a majority of the population could not afford to buy consumer goods due to the drop of wages and increase of unemployment. Because of the high tariffs European countries were unable to sell goods in the American market. Many American investors chose not to invest their money outside of the US stock market. This created a significant problem for international commerce when the stock market crashed (Norton, 2015).
